Some of the common microwave problems that require repair are:
Microwave not heating : It is one of the most common problems in microwave. The biggest reason behind microwave not heating is usually a damaged magnetron. The magnetron produces microwave frequency responsible for cooking food. If you run the microwave empty, it can cause the magnetron to burn out. Other probable causes behind this problem are faulty diodes, capacitor burn, defective door switch and transformer failure.
Microwave runs for some time and then stops : This could happen due to defect in door switch, short on the high voltage, tripped thermoprotector, defective thermostat or faulty fan motor.
Microwave glass plate not spinning : This problem occurs when the rotating or turntable motor below the plate has been worn out or has burned out. In such cases, the rotating motor is replaced. There can be other reasons for microwave glass plate not spinning like defect within the main control board or User Control and Display Board. Also, if there is a button on the microwave touchpad for switching the turntable on and off, it is possible that there is some problem with the Touchpad and control Panel.
Microwave buttons not working : This may indicate problem with the touch-pad or the control panel or a defective main control board.
The Microwave Light Bulb not working : There is a small bulb inside your microwave located behind the grill, which lights when the microwave runs. If the bulb does not work then it may have fused. Another possible reasons are faulty bulb socket and bad wiring. If the bulb, socket and wiring are fine then check the main control board. The control board may have gone bad and fails to send voltage to bulb socket.
Microwave sparking problem : Sparking inside the microwave is often not a big problem. If there is sparking in the microwave, just switch off the microwave immediately and check the necessary wiring. There can be several reasons behind this problem – waveguide Cover is defective or has shorted out, diode burn, damaged rack support or worn out paint from the inside walls.

Most frequent causes behind your microwave not heating up:
Damaged Diode : Diode is one of the most important component of your microwave which converts incoming A/C power to high voltage D/C. This high voltage is used by magnetron to heat or cook food. So, if there is defect in diode or it has burnt out, the magnetron does not get enough voltage to heat or cook food.
Defective Magnetron : After diode, the second most important component is magnetron. The microwave oven is mainly powered by the magnetron tube that utilizes high voltage producing microwave frequency responsible for cooking food. If you run the microwave empty, it can cause the magnetron to burn out. A damaged magnetron cannot be repaired and has to be replaced.
Defect in High Voltage Capacitor : The high voltage capacitor and high voltage diode work together to convert the output of A/C power to high voltage D/C in order to double the output voltage. If the capacitor is faulty or has burned out, the entire high voltage circuit will stop working. As a result, the magnetron won’t be able to emit microwave frequency to heat or cook food i.e. microwave won’t heat.
Defect in High Voltage Transformer : A faulty high voltage transformer does not let the incoming A/C power to convert into high voltage D/C, thereby leaving the magnetron powerless to emit heat to cook food. When a high voltage transformer fails, it will usually arc and have a burning smell.
Most frequent causes behind your microwave not working properly:
Defect in Line Fuse : The line fuse can blow if excessive current is passed through the microwave circuitry, i.e. more than required current is being used by the microwave components. So, if the line fuse blows, microwave does not start. The fuse is easily replaceable, but you should hire a professional microwave technician to know why exactly it happened in the first place in order to avoid such cases in future.
Defect in Main Control Board : Another reason could be problem with main control board. But firstly, check all other parts, connections, wirings of the microwave and if they turned out to be working fine, only then should you check the main control board. A defective main control board can be easily replaced.
Defect in Thermal Fuse : Whenever microwave overheats, the thermal fuse cuts off power to the microwave. You can use a multimeter in order to check whether the thermal fuse has blown out or not. If the fuse does not have continuity, it must be replaced.
Defect in Thermoprotector : If the microwave overheats, the thermoprotector trips to cut off voltage to the microwave. Just like thermal fuse, if thermoprotector is at fault, you can determine the same using a multimeter. If the thermoprotector does not have continuity, it must be replaced as well.
Scrape of metal inside microwave: Do you know that just a small piece of metal scrape is enough to cause spark inside the microwave. When you clean the microwave with steel wool it ends up leaving behind the metal scrape from the wool. So it is strongly recommended not to clean the microwave with metal wool. Another reason is that the food that you heat may be covered with a foil and that foil is just enough to cause sparking inside the microwave oven.
Damaged or broken waveguide cover: You will come across a cover called waveguide cover over the magnetron. Waveguide is responsible for guiding heat waves to the central area where the food is kept in a microwave. This cover also prohibits the food particles from entering the magnetron. What happens is during cooking grease and some food particles escapes and sticks to the waveguide. The heat that gets discharged from the magnetron ends up buring these food particles and causes repeated sparks. These frequent sparks damage the waveguide cover. So a damaged waveguide cover causes repeated sparks.
Damaged rack support: Rack support is a hook like part that supports the microwave. But if the microwave sparks near this support rack it means that the paint that is on the rack has deteriorated and it should be immediately replaced with a new one.
Not using microwave safe utensils: If you are not using microwave safe utensils that sparkling may occur.
Issue or problem with turntable: Like all other appliance age and constant use can cause the turntable to malfunction. This is the most common reason for microwave making loud and unusual noise.
Magnetron tube: If you constantly hear growling or a high pitched sound coming from the microwave then its a hint or an indication that the magnetron tube may have become defective. This magnetron tube is accountable or responsible for creating frequency which cooks the food. The device operates silently only when it is in the good condition. Those high pitched and growling noises that you hear from the appliance indicates that the magnetron tube needs to be replaced.
Stirrer motor problem: The stirrer is a metal blade which is responsible for distributing the microwave energy by rotating and this is what causes your food to cook evenly. But after years of constant use this stirrer motor gets deteriorated and causes grinding noise.
Damaged control panel: Damaged control is the most common reason for microwave button not working. To determine whether it is an actual issue or not then try pressing each of the buttons on the control panel. If some buttons are working fine while others or not then you need to replace both the touchpad and the control panel.
Control board: Another reason behind this could be the problem with the control panel. If the touchpad of the appliance does not respond but the display is still lighting up then this could be the issue with the control board. The control board is responsible for supplying the touchpad with low voltage signal which in turn gets supplied to the membrane switch. If the control board does not supply low voltage signal then you need to replace it.
Membrane switch: If the buttons on the microwave touchpad doesnot work then it may be the problem with the membrane switch. Membrane switch is also known as touchpad and has few electrical switches. With constant usuage the conductive coating on the touchpad can get damaged. To check this all you need to do is do unplug the appliance and remove the cabinet. Use the multimeter to test the touchpad. When pressed there should be few ohm of resistance and if not then you need to get it replaced.
